Why get involved in a distributed computing project?
As I write this we are 62 days into 2010 and 1,340,000 people have died of cancer worldwide. Over 34,000,000 are living with AIDS. 9.5 million suffer nutritional deficiency.
Many members of the XtremeSystems Teams have lost people they loved to cancer. A few are dealing with cancer now, either themselves or someone they love. Loonym, a beloved member of our WCG team passed away at Christmas time 2009 after loosing his battle with bladder cancer. He left behind a 2 year old daughter with no family to take her. She went to a loving couple who were friends.
I do not know who the people are in the pictures to the right but I know what they suffer from.
Besides being rewarding, knowing you are helping to fight some of the plagues of the 21st century, it is also fun. Many of us enjoy comparing hardware and operating systems, over clocking, liquid cooling and systems that are Xtreme!
We have fun talking trash and giving each other grief over getting more points or newer better hardware. There are inter team challenges and races. It is a community of people from all walks of life who enjoy technology, a challenge and doing something that will reduce the suffering in this world.
